Castlewellan

A market town with the main entrance to Castlewellan Forest Park. The park covers 460 hectares and it is a mixed woodland with a wide range of walks and cycle trails.

Outdoor facilities include mountain biking trails, fishing, nature watching, canoeing, pony trekking, rambling, orienteering and camping.

The Castle

Constructed from local granite the castle was built in the Scottish baronial style. It sits at the base of the wooded slopes and overlooks the lake. The castle is now used as a conferance centre.

The Lake

The lake is a mile long ringed by hills and clothed in broad leaved and coniferous woodland, and open areas of mature parkland.

The Peace Maze at Castlewellan Forest Park

The Peace Maze

The Peace Maze was created to mark the signing of the Good Friday Agreement and was supported by the local community as a symbol of unity over the peace deal.

This is one of the largest hedge mazes in the world with 3.5 kilometers of winding pathways to get to the centre where you will have a superb view of the Mourne Mountains.

Annesley Garden and Arboretum

A magnificent collection of trees and shrubs set in landscaped surroundings with fountains, ponds and ornamental greenhouses. Next to the Annesley garden are the Spring garden,the Rhododendron wood, the winter garden and the Cypress pond.
